Why did railways back out from Vande Bharat’s aluminum coaches deal?

Vande Bharat Train Coach: Indian Railways is working rapidly on the operation of Vande Bharat trains. A day ago, news came that the Railways has canceled the contract of 100 Vande Bharat trains to be made from a deal of Rs 30000 crore. It is being told that the Railways is reconsidering the plan to install sleeper coaches in the Vande Bharat train made of aluminum. Actually, this is because these trains cost more to make and the right information or technology to make such trains is not available in the country yet.

Tender worth Rs 30,000 crore had to be cancelled

Indian Railways had to cancel a tender worth Rs 30,000 crore to buy 100 Vande Bharat trains made of aluminium. This is because the company that quoted the lowest price, Alstom India, quoted a price of Rs 150.9 crore for one train. Earlier it was told that the idea of making coaches from aluminium was given so that the train would be able to run at a faster speed due to being lighter. Trains made of aluminium are lighter than steel trains and consume less electricity. Currently, the Railways has finalised the tender to buy 102 Vande Bharat trains with chair cars and 200 Vande Bharat trains with sleepers.

Earlier the construction was done at Rs 120 crore per rack;
the railway’s tender committee had fixed the maximum price as Rs 140 crore. But Alstom India showed its willingness to do the deal at around Rs 145 crore per train set. Still no agreement could be reached and the tender was cancelled. Earlier, the railways had given the contract to manufacture 200 Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets at the cost of Rs 120 crore per rack. A spokesperson of Alstom India says that the price they had quoted was the lowest and was cheaper than other similar trains available in the market.
