The speed at which highways and expressways are being constructed in India, transportation is also gaining momentum at the same pace. Vehicles are speeding on highways and expressways. Now the government has taken another step to give more speed to vehicles on these roads. According to the new rule, if you drive on a highway or expressway, then now you will not have to pay any toll for up to 20 kilometers.
The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has given this exemption to those private vehicles which have Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) installed. Let us understand what is this Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and how this whole system will work, how will your travel style change on highways and expressways?
There will be no toll tax for 20 kilometers
The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has amended the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules 2008. The government has approved the GPS based toll system. Under this new system, vehicles will not need to stop at the toll plaza. Through the new satellite-based system, toll tax will be deducted directly with the help of the number plate of the vehicles without the hassle of fast tag or cash. With this new system, toll will be collected from vehicles through GPS. The government has exempted private vehicles equipped with GNSS from toll tax up to 20 km.
The more the vehicle runs, the more tax you will have to pay
Under the new rule, tax will be charged on highways and expressways only as much as the distance the vehicle travels. The satellite-based toll system depends on GNSS technology, which traces the exact location of vehicles. Hence, the tax has to be paid as much as the distance travelled by the vehicle. For the new toll collection, it is necessary to have on-board units (OBU) and GPS in the vehicles. The new system will be different from Fastag or Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
Toll booths will end, there will be no jam
After the implementation of GNSS based toll tax system, people will enjoy travelling without stopping anywhere. Under this system, the tax will be deducted as per the number of kilometres travelled by the vehicles. Once this system is fully implemented, toll booths and toll plazas will be abolished across the country. There will be no long jams at toll plazas. Under this GNSS system, the more the vehicle travels on the highway or expressway, the money will be automatically deducted from the account as per the distance. This means that vehicles will not need to stop at toll plazas. Vehicles will run at high speed on the highway.
What is the complete system of GNSS, how will it work?
At present, people pay toll tax with fastag or cash, due to which there is a queue of vehicles at the toll plaza. Vehicles have to stop at toll plazas built at various places, but now a new system is coming. The GNSS system will be a satellite-based navigation system, in which toll tax will be deducted with the help of GPS and OBU installed in the vehicles. This entire system will work with the help of India’s own navigation systems GAGAN and NavIC. With their help, it will be easy to track vehicles.
How will the new toll system work?
For the new toll system, On-Board Units i.e. OBU will be installed in vehicles. With the help of this tracking device, vehicles will be tracked on the highway. Through this tracking machine, the distance traveled by the vehicles on the highway will be calculated. To help in this, there will be GPS and GNSS, which will help OBU in toll calculation. This GNSS system will be attached to the bank account linked on Aadhaar. The money will be deducted directly from the account for the distance traveled by the vehicles on the highway, expressway.
What will be the benefit of this new system
After the new system is fully implemented, people will not have to face traffic jams at toll plazas. They will be free from the hassle of cash or fast tag. The more you travel, the more toll tax you will have to pay. At the same time, you will not have to pay anything for traveling up to a distance of 20 km. People will save both time and money.
