Preparation for decorating the tableau

Devotees who decorate tableaus on the occasion of Shri Krishna’s birth anniversary should prepare for this holy task by fasting for the whole day. On this day, the door of the house is decorated with banana pillars, mango or Ashoka leaves etc. Mangal Kalash is installed at the door, so that auspiciousness can come to the house. All these preparations show the devotion and reverence towards Shri Krishna in the mind of a devotee.

What things should be kept in mind while decorating the tableau

While decorating the tableau, it is necessary to keep some special things in mind. First of all, leaves of thorny trees should not be used in the tableau, such as cactus and other thorny plants. Instead, maximum use should be made of Ashoka tree leaves and mango tree leaves. These leaves are considered a symbol of auspiciousness and prosperity and their use maintains the sanctity of the tableau.

Leaves of trees which give out milk should not be used in decorating the tableau, such as rubber plant and white water lily etc. Also keep in mind that harmful, synthetic and inflammable items should not be used in the tableau, because these clothes indicate inauspiciousness rather than auspiciousness.

special decoration of tableau

Peacock feathers should be used in the tableau. Peacock feathers are a major part of Shri Krishna’s crown and it is associated with many incidents of his life. Apart from this, the flute should be decorated with lace and given a prominent place in the tableau, because the flute is a symbol of Shri Krishna’s identity. Pictures or statues of cows and calves should be used in the tableau, so that Shri Krishna’s child form and his affection towards Gop Gopi can be displayed.

To depict the environment of Shri Krishna’s birth, his childhood, youth and the stages up to the knowledge of Gita should be depicted in the tableau, but keep in mind that only the huge form of Shri Krishna should be shown in the tableau, not the scene of the Mahabharata war. This tableau should remain for 6 days and its aarti should be performed daily. The tableau should be immersed only after celebrating Laddu Gopal’s Chhathi on the sixth day.
