Netflix content head summoned amid ‘Kandahar hijack’ controversy, people angry over Hindu names of terrorists

The web series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ based on the 1999 Kandahar Hijack was streamed on Netflix on 29 August last month, which has been badly embroiled in controversies since its release. People are demanding its boycott on social media. Actually, the names of the terrorists who hijacker the plane in the series have been shown as Hindus, due to which all this protest is rising. Also, people are expressing their displeasure. 

Seeing the growing resentment among the people regarding this, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned the content head of Netflix. The ministry has asked him to appear on Tuesday. People on social media have expressed anger about why the terrorists were named Hindu? Air India flight IC 814 was hijacked by terrorists after taking off from Kathmandu on 24 December 1999. Five terrorists hijacked the plane and all these terrorists were Muslims.

Their real names were Ibrahim Akhtar, Shahid Akhtar, Sunny Ahmed, Zahoor Mistry and Shakir. But in this series directed by Anubhav Sinha, the names of all the terrorists have been changed. The names of the terrorists have been given as Bhola and Shankar. There is a controversy on social media regarding this. Also, people are demanding a boycott of the series. This plane faced obstacles at many places before landing in Kandahar. There were 176 passengers in it. As soon as the plane entered Indian airspace, five masked terrorists hijacked it. 

This series is based on a true incident 

Before reaching Kandahar, IC 814 had to land in Amritsar, Lahore, and Dubai. In Dubai, the terrorists left 27 passengers, women, elderly and children. One passenger suffered serious knife injuries, which led to his death. Apart from this, 17 people were injured. A total of 191 people including 15 crew members were on board the plane. Actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Vijay Verma, Dia Mirza, Arvind Swami and Rajiv Thakur are seen in this series. This series has been released recently.
