The 1999 Kargil war lasted for more than two months. We made many mistakes during that time. We ignored the forests thinking they were trees. Terrorism was a challenge in the Kashmir Valley and the security forces engaged in dealing with it forgot to see what was happening at high altitudes in the Himalayas.
Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan said all this while speaking on the lessons learned from the Kargil war on Thursday.
CDS General Anil Chauhan said that apart from cherishing the memories of the war, we should also look at the situation after it. Necessary lessons should be taken from the war and the same mistakes should not be repeated in future. CDS said that apart from cherishing the memories of the war, it is also important to look at its results and take useful lessons for the future.

General Chauhan said, “The memories of the sacrifices made by our soldiers should become part of our national folklore, as has happened with the Kargil war.” He was speaking at a ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of victory in the Kargil war, held in New Delhi. The war started on May 3 and ended with India’s decisive victory on July 26. India celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas every year on July 26.
Pakistan’s ideology has not been changed even today: CDS General Anil Chauhan
General Chauhan said, ‘After the defeat in 1971 (war), Pakistan always wanted to take revenge on us. Our occupation of Siachen Glacier in 1984 was another humiliation that Pakistan had to suffer. Its action in Kargil was to regain its honour, but clearly all its efforts failed in their aim.’ The CDS said that ‘the proxy war we are seeing today is the result of the same ideology and thinking which has not changed.’
