India’s smartphone market booming, market reaches 3.9 crore units

India Smartphone Market: The smartphone market in the country grew by 3.2 percent in the second quarter of 2024 and reached 3.9 crore units. Market research company International Data Corporation (IDC) said in a report, Chinese smartphone maker Vivo dominated the market with a 16.5 percent share. Its sales grew 6.7 percent year-on-year. Apple was at the forefront in the ‘super premium’ segment, which includes smartphones priced above Rs 67,000. Its market share was 83 percent, while Samsung’s was 16 percent.

Motorola recorded the highest increase

“Overall, Vivo continued to grow for the second consecutive quarter with multiple offerings across different price segments through the Y series, mid-premium V series and the flagship X Fold 3 Pro. Motorola recorded the highest growth across product segments across price ranges,” the report said. Vivo was followed by Xiaomi in second place with 13.5 per cent market share. According to the report, Samsung slipped to third place with 12.9 per cent share as its sales declined 15.4 per cent year-on-year.

6.9 crore smartphone sales in the first half
According to the ‘IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker’, 6.9 crore smartphones will be sold in the Indian smartphone market in the first half of 2024. The report said, Apple’s share in the premium segment (priced Rs 50,000 to Rs 67,000) increased to 61 percent year-on-year, while Samsung’s share increased from 21 percent a year ago to 24 percent. IDC Associate Vice President Navkendar Singh said, ‘The entry-level premium segment (priced Rs 6,700 to Rs 33,500) will see good growth, while the entry-level segment (priced up to US $ 100) will remain a challenge at least this year.

Even though efforts are being made to introduce affordable 5G smartphones. Also, the promotion of GenAI smartphones is expected to remain quite strong. The entry-premium segment achieved the highest growth in the overall smartphone market. It includes phones priced from Rs 16,000 to Rs 33,500.

The share of this segment increased from 22 percent to 30 percent and recorded the highest growth of 42 percent year-on-year. According to the report, 2.7 crore 5G smartphones were sold in the quarter. The share of 5G smartphones in sales increased to 77 percent, from 49 percent in the same period a year ago.
