Bangladesh Violence: ‘If they come to our door, we will give them shelter…’ Does Mamata have the right to do this?

Amidst the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given a shocking statement. She said that if Bangladeshis knock on our door, we will give them shelter. She said that our government will give shelter to the people of violence-affected Bangladesh.

More than 40 people have died in Bangladesh violence. Curfew has been imposed across the country. In such a situation, the question arises whether Mamata has the right to give shelter to Bangladeshis?

First let us tell you about Mamata Banerjee’s statement. She said that I cannot say anything about Bangladesh because it is a different country. The Indian government will talk about it. But if helpless people (from Bangladesh) knock on the door of Bengal, we will give them shelter. Citing the United Nations resolution, she talked about respecting neighboring refugees.

Assurance of all possible cooperation

Mamata Banerjee referred to the Bangladesh violence while addressing a mega ‘Shaheed Diwas’ rally of the Trinamool Congress amid heavy rains in Kolkata. She said, “I assure all possible help to the residents of Bengal whose relatives are stranded in violence-hit Bangladesh.”

Mamata doesn’t have the right…

There is more politics and less practicality in Mamata Banerjee’s latest statement on giving shelter to Bangladeshis. First of all, no UN resolution is binding on any country. If Mamata Banerjee is referring to the 1951 UN Convention, then India has not even signed it. The state government cannot decide on its own to open the border with any country or to give shelter to the citizens of any country. This is the decision of the Center.

More than 40 people were killed

Let us tell you that the violence in Bangladesh has not stopped yet. To curb this, the authorities have imposed a strict curfew across the country. Military personnel patrolled parts of the capital Dhaka. Violence broke out when protests started in some parts of the country over the allocation of government jobs. So far more than 40 people have died and hundreds are injured in the violence.

A direct target on BJP

Mamata Banerjee also praised Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who was present at the event, for his party’s performance in the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. She said that the government at the Centre will not last long. It is not a stable government and will fall soon. The ‘game’ you played in UP should have made the BJP government (in UP) resign, but the shameless government remains in power by misusing agencies and other means.
