There appears to be a problem for Meta because of Mark Zuckerberg’s comments regarding India’s parliamentary elections. Now the parliamentary panel has the authority to serve summons on the company. The news regarding the summons comes at a time when a day earlier, on Monday, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav responded to the remarks made by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Actually, Zuckerberg said that post Kovid-19 pandemic, the present governments of most of the countries including India had to lose elections in 2024. The minister had said that his statement was factually incorrect in nature.
The chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on communications and IT, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, said, “Meta is going to have to apologize in regard to the allegations of misleading information. My committee is going to call Meta for this misleading information. In any country with a functioning democracy, spreading misinformation brings that country into disrepute. That organisation will have to make an apology in the Indian Parliament and to the citizens living here for the error.”
What did Vaishnav tell Ashwini?
Vaishnav remarked in a ‘X’ post that India, as the largest country employed democracy, held elections in 2024 with more than sixty four crore voters. For the third consecutive time, they elected the NDA which was again led by Modi. The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting asserted that Zuckerberg’s assertion that India and many other countries did not win the 2024 elections for being in power after the Covid pandemic is inaccurate.
What did Zuckerberg say that led to such an outcry?
According to Mr Zuckerberg, who had appeared in a podcast, most countries fighting for re election including India lost in the 2024 elections.
‘It’s sad that Zuckerberg himself is indulging in spreading false information.’ Vaishnav stated that providing 80 crore people with free food and assisting countries globally with 2.2 billion vaccines alongside being the fastest growing major economy proves Mr. Modi won the elections for the third term due to good governance and constant public support. Referring to Meta, he stated that it is disheartening to see Zuckerberg himself spread misinformation as he puts it, rather than taking it upon himself to uphold the truth.
