Ford re-enters India, cars will be manufactured from Chennai plant only

Ford Chennai Manufacturing Plant: US automaker Ford on Friday said it is planning to use its Chennai manufacturing plant to make vehicles for export. The company said it has informed the Tamil Nadu government about this.

After shutting down its operations in India in 2021 and stopping all exports from the country in 2022, Ford Motor has again floated the idea of opening its manufacturing unit in India for exports.

This strategic move will see the facility rebuilt to focus on manufacturing for export to global markets, as part of the company’s ambitious Ford+ growth plan.

The announcement came following a meeting between the Ford leadership and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin during his visit to the US, Ford said in the statement.

Ford currently employs 12,000 individuals in global business operations in Tamil Nadu, a number that is expected to grow by 2,500 to 3,000 jobs in the next three years. With engine manufacturing operations in Sanand, India is Ford’s second-largest salaried workforce worldwide, the carmaker said in a statement.
