According to mythology, the atrocities of demons named Hiranyakashyap and Hiranyaksha were increasing on the earth. Hiranyaksha did severe penance to perform yagya etc. and defeated the gods and started torturing people. Along with this, a demon named Hiranyaksha took the earth to the netherworld and drowned it in the ocean. Then to protect the earth and the gods, Lord Vishnu took the form of Varaha.
