Now there will be no 2-hour break for Friday prayers in Assam Assembly

New Delhi. A big decision was taken in the Assam Assembly on Friday, in which the break for Namaz on Friday was abolished. This decision puts an end to a British era rule, which was continuing till now. In the Assam Assembly, every Friday from 12 noon to 2 pm, a two-hour break was given for Muslim MLAs to offer Namaz. But now this rule has been changed and from now on no break will be given on Fridays.

BJP MLA from Sarupathar assembly constituency Biswajit Phukan informed about this decision. He said that this decision was taken unanimously in a meeting chaired by Assam Speaker of Assam Assembly Biswajit Daimary. He said that this decision has the support of all the MLAs. It has been observed that no break is given for Namaz in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and other state assemblies. Therefore, the Speaker of Assam Assembly also decided to end this British era rule.

Phukan said the Assam Assembly begins at 9:30 am from Monday to Thursday, while on Fridays it used to begin at 9 am to give a two-hour break for namaz, but now it will change to 9:30 am every day.

Along with this, the Assam Assembly on Thursday passed another important bill, which makes compulsory registration of Muslim marriages and divorces necessary. The aim of passing the Assam Compulsory Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Bill, 2024 is to protect the rights of Muslim women and men and eliminate child marriage. This law will replace the old Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935.

During the discussion on this bill, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the states with the highest Muslim population in India are Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir. In Kerala, this Act would have been brought by either the Congress or the Left government, as the BJP has never come to power in this southern state. He expressed concern about the safety of Muslim women and said that the Muslim Marriage Registration Act will give them protection and rights.
