Ukraine creates big problem for Moscow

Ukrainian Forces on Russian Territory: Ukraine said on Sunday it had attacked a second key bridge in the Kursk region, aiming to disrupt Moscow’s supply route. Kiev’s unprecedented invasion of Russian soil continues into a second week.

Meanwhile, Russia has increased pressure in eastern Ukraine. It has claimed that it has captured another village a few kilometers away from the logistics center of Pokrovsk occupied by Ukraine.

Ukrainian air force commander Mykola Oleshchuk published an aerial video on Telegram of an explosion tearing apart a bridge near the Russian town of Zvyanoye. “Another bridge has been destroyed,” he wrote.

Oleshchuk said, ‘Air Force aviation continues to destroy the enemy’s military capabilities with precise air strikes.’ However, it is not clear when Ukraine attacked. Oleshchuk did not give the date. Russian military bloggers shared pictures of the destruction of the same bridge on Saturday.

Kiev sent troops and armoured vehicles across the border on August 6. It was its biggest attack on Russian territory since the Kremlin launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. On Friday, Ukraine claimed it had destroyed another bridge in Glushkovo.

‘ The aim is to create a buffer zone’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said of the operations in the Kursk region in his evening address on Sunday, “Our people are doing a great job in all areas.” He said the aim of the Kursk attack was to “create a buffer zone in the aggressor’s territory.”

The Ukrainian President reiterated his appeal for rapid delivery of main equipment, specifically addressing Britain, France and the United States.

Big problem for Russia
According to Russian military bloggers, attacks on both bridges on the Seim River that flows through Kursk have left Russia with limited options for crossing the river. Moscow said the destruction of one of the bridges has hampered evacuation efforts.

Russian officials say more than 120,000 people have fled the region since the fighting began.

Russia moves towards Pokrovsk
Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Sunday that its troops had captured another border settlement, Sviridonivka, about 15 kilometers (nine miles) from Pokrovsk. Pokrovsk, located at the intersection of a major road that is vital for supplying Ukrainian troops and towns on the eastern front, has long been a target for the Russian army.

Russian forces have been advancing toward Pokrovsk for months, seizing small villages to reach the outskirts of the city.

“There have been dozens of attacks in just one day, but our troops, our brigades are making every effort to maintain their positions,” Zelensky said in his evening address.

The head of Pokrovsk’s military administration, Sergei Dobryak, warned earlier this week that Russia was little more than 10 kilometres from the outskirts of the city and urged those remaining to evacuate.
