Chaturmas and Sawan start from this day

Every fast and festival has great importance in astrology. Chaturmas means four months of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that during this time Lord Vishnu goes to Patal Lok and rests at King Bali’s place. According to religious beliefs, during Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu sleeps in Patal Lok for four months and due to this, this time is considered inauspicious for any kind of auspicious work and marriage etc.

When is Chaturmas starting?

According to the Panchang, Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi Tithi is starting from 08:33 PM on July 16 and it will end on July 17 at 09:02 PM. Based on Udayatithi, Devshayani Ekadashi is on July 17, hence Chaturmas will start from July 17.

Beginning of Lord Shiva’s Sawan

Sawan is starting from 22nd July this month. The month of Sawan is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva is especially worshipped in this month. Legend has it that whoever worships Lord Shiva with a true heart in this month, all his sorrows go away. The month of Sawan is also considered very important for getting a desired life partner.

Keep these things in mind during Chaturmas

During these months, one should not consume rice with oil, curd, radish, brinjal etc. During this period, Lord Vishnu rests in Ksheer Sagar and Goddess Lakshmi serves him continuously. During this time, chant the mantras of Lord Vishnu along with Goddess Lakshmi.

Good deeds won’t happen

During Chaturmas, no auspicious work is done such as marriage, Upanayanam ceremony, Graha Pravesh etc. After four months, on Devuthani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu wakes up from his sleep and starts operating the universe again.

Why is the month of Savan special this time?

According to the calculation of Sankranti, this time Rotak Vrat is being observed in the month of Sawan. If we believe the scriptures, this year Sawan has 5 Mondays, the Sawan in which 5 Mondays fall is called Rotak Vrat. By observing Rotak Vrat, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati fulfill all the wishes.

Legend has it that in the month of Shravan, Lord Shiva was pleased with the penance of Maa Parvati and agreed to make her his better half. Since then, it has been a tradition that any girl who observes a fast for Lord Shiva on Monday in the month of Shravan also gets the desired groom like Maa Parvati.
